Lab-Grown and Natural Diamonds: Differences, Value, and Certification

Les Lulú

Are they real diamonds? Yes. History, differences and certifications of lab-grown diamonds: the same light, a more sustainable path.
Lab grown and natural diamonds: the guide — Les Lulú

A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond: the same carbon, the same structure, the same brilliance as a mined diamond. Only the origin differs. Here is what to know to choose with confidence.

What is a diamond

A diamond is pure carbon, arranged in the densest crystal structure found in nature. This is what makes it the hardest material known — a perfect 10 on the Mohs hardness scale — and what gives it its brilliance. In nature it forms roughly ninety miles underground, under enormous pressure and extreme heat, over spans measured in millions of years; it then rises to the surface through ancient volcanic eruptions.

Mined and lab-grown diamonds: the difference

The difference is origin. A mined diamond forms deep underground and is brought to light by mining. A lab-grown diamond is born by recreating, under controlled conditions, the same pressure, temperature, and carbon that nature employs below the surface, producing the very same crystal in a matter of weeks. In chemical composition, structure, and optical properties, the two are identical.

How a lab-grown diamond is born

There are two methods. HPHT (high pressure, high temperature) reproduces underground conditions with a press capable of reaching temperatures around 1,600 °C and pressures on the order of one hundred thousand atmospheres. CVD (chemical vapor deposition) grows the crystal layer by layer from a carbon-rich gas, allowing finer control and larger gems.

The key milestones

  • 1954 — General Electric creates the first documented synthetic diamond (HPHT method).
  • 1971 — The first jewelry-quality lab-grown diamond is born.
  • The 1980s — The CVD method is developed; the gems become steadily more accessible.
  • 2007 — The GIA introduces the first report dedicated to lab-grown diamonds.
  • 2018 — The U.S. Federal Trade Commission officially recognizes lab-grown stones as diamonds in every respect.
  • October 1, 2025 — The GIA adopts two descriptive categories for lab-grown diamonds, Premium and Standard, in place of the traditional 4C scale.

How a lab-grown diamond is graded

Diamonds are described by the same four characteristics, the celebrated 4Cs: cut, color, clarity, and carat. They are analyzed by the leading gemological institutes, including the GIA and IGI. On their reports, lab-grown stones carry the explicit designation laboratory-grown, and gems over 0.20 carats are inscribed on the girdle with the same wording: a guarantee of transparency. Since October 1, 2025, the GIA has described lab-grown diamonds with two dedicated categories — Premium and Standard — because the great majority of these gems fall within a very high, consistent range of color and clarity.

Is a lab-grown diamond worth less?

For equal beauty, brilliance, and certification, a lab-grown diamond generally carries a more accessible price than a mined stone of the same characteristics. It is one of the reasons it lets you wear a real diamond every day, and not only on grand occasions. Its value, for those who choose it, lies in the same light and in the conscious choice it represents.

Why Les Lulú chooses lab-grown diamonds

For equal beauty and certification, a lab-grown diamond comes from a process that leaves mining aside, with a lighter impact on the environment. This is why Les Lulú chooses it with conviction, and tells its story with pleasure: the same diamond, a more respectful path.

Frequently asked questions about lab-grown diamonds

Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?

Yes. They have the same chemical composition, the same crystal structure, and the same optical properties as mined diamonds. Since 2018, the Federal Trade Commission has officially recognized them as diamonds.

Can you tell them apart from a natural diamond with the naked eye?

They are indistinguishable to the naked eye: the difference in origin can only be detected with laboratory instruments, and it is stated on gemological reports.

Is a lab-grown diamond forever?

Yes. With a hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale, it is as resistant as any diamond and lasts through time.

How is a lab-grown diamond certified?

With a report from a gemological institute such as GIA or IGI, which always states the wording laboratory-grown; on gems over 0.20 carats, the same designation is inscribed on the stone's girdle.
